Knicks on the rise after big trade, Bucks in free fall, Mavericks crack top five

New Year’s resolutions are rarely followed through, but there are a few NBA teams that hope the promising start to 2024 carries all the way through the season. First and foremost are the New York Knicks, who vaulted into the top three of this week’s NBA Power Rankings thanks in part to their new forward, OG Anunoby, who was acquired from the Toronto Raptors just over a week ago.

The Knicks’ undefeated week has them just behind the powerhouse Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets — in that order — as Boston’s missteps weren’t enough to knock them off the pedestal … yet.

Another team that’s been at the top of the rankings for most of the season, the Milwaukee Bucks, suffered a precipitous fall this week thanks to three bad losses and a seemingly unhappy Giannis Antetokounmpo. They were the league’s biggest fallers, dropping 11 spots to No. 14. On the positive side we have the Indiana Pacers, whose 13-spot rise is somewhat bittersweet due to the injury suffered by Tyrese Haliburton on Monday night.

Here’s a look at the first set of NBA Power Rankings for 2024.
